Deciduous Fruit Industry Honours Buks Nel and Henk Griessel with the Hortgro 1662 Industry Award

The 1662 Award was created to celebrate the first two Witte Wijn Appels that were picked in the Company’s Garden on the 17th April 1662 and to recognise the humble beginnings of the deciduous fruit industry in Southern Africa. The award is the deciduous fruit industry’s way to honour and recognise outstanding contributions of individuals or groups to our industry.

This year the award goes to Buks Nel and Henk Griessel for their immeasurable contribution through their respective careers in the deciduous fruit industry and for championing the search to return the Witte Wijn apple to South Africa. The plant material was imported from Holland and trees was gifted to the City of Cape Town and to Babylonstoren in 2020. Buks and Henk also co-authored two valuable books on the history of apples: Apples in the Early Days at The Cape and The Newcomers and their Friends.

Their passion and dedication to the industry will always be sincerely appreciated.
